Improvising!
I was able to photograph a young lady this weekend who brought to mind an interesting topic: Improvising. There are so many instances when a photo shoot doesn’t go quite how it was envisioned, sometime this leads to panic, and disappointment. But as many other photographers have done before me, it has become second nature to improvise.
In this instance I was photographing a four year old who was feeling a bit shy; her mother wanted traditional studio type photos, but the daughter felt to much pressure on the back drop with the strobes pointed at her. So after some quick analysis of their home, what they were wearing and the impressions I got from Mom, I moved us a few feet over (we set up the studio outside) into the overgrown grass and dandelions and we tried to capture the sweet personality of this young lady in a way that would appease Mother and daughter, until she was ready to get on the studio again. We did this by keeping the controlled studio lighting, and using a stool, but adding dandelion puffs and flowers for the young lady to play with so she would let her guard down a bit.
Improvising is so important. To be able to capture that style and atmosphere that ones client wanted, while using different environments, props, and attitudes. The weather could have easily pushed us inside, or the child could have been asleep, or cranky… There are always solutions to make the most of whatever situation you are thrown! Especially when photographing children!

Off to shoot more this weekend!
I am having a lot of fun doing shoots with friends, family, and clients! I always love to have my camera out. I have been really behind on everything lately. I am putting a lot on my plate, but it keeps life exciting!
I am currently learning how to build and manipulate a flash website! So I can update my site with a sleak and more high class look. I am also looking to restructure my pricing in a way that is more “friendly” to others. Lately I have been thinking about uping my hourly rate to cover my processing and editing time, and just including digital negatives with all of my packages and not offering prints any more. Thus not having to deal in prints! I would love to hear everyones opinions on this!!!

Folk Fairy…
I had a lot of fun this weekend. I got to do a shoot with the lovely and talented Jenni Potts. She was a great model, and was very dynamic. The day was beautiful and the City of Bellingham always has a lot of great backdrops to offer!
Jenni Potts’ music is a great folk sound that is mellow, haunting, and beautiful. I suggest that you check out her web page and listen to some of her music. She’s
a great performer and talent!
Dream List Media
I had the great experience of photographing Melissa the owner and face of Dream List Media. She was really easy to photograph, this is because she has such a wonderful and happy attitude that can be seen in every frame!
Melissa created Dream List Media to help inspire people to live their dreams! She gives motivational talks to Youth, Women, Educators, Parents, and Corporate groups, as well as supplying her wonderful Dream List Photo Journals; in which you record your dreams, document your conquests and remember your accomplishments when you need a pick-me-up!
She hash a radio program where she has many guests that cover very informative and insperational subjects. And she has told me that she is working on getting a television program put together. Melissa certaninly is living her dreams, and I would recommend that everyone take a look at her site and get inspired!

I have been playing around with photoshop the last few days, and I thought I would share some of my creations..
Sandpiper
I love to go out of my element every once in a while. And in this latest instance I REALLY ENJOYED it. I had the wonderful chance to photograph a high-end vacation rental home.
It was absolutely gorgeous, and incredibly calming. Usually I relish in the chaos and high-energy of a family or child portrait shoot. But in this instance I was able to quietly set up my shots, and enjoy this stunning house. I did on occasion find myself complimenting and encouraging my subjects.
The Sandpiper is a beautiful rental vacation home on Samish Island, only 25minutes from Bellingham. It right on the beach so you can watch the tides come in and go out and view the stunning mountains and islands that adorn the landscape. There is a Large Great room, attached dining room, and a beautiful kitchen. It has Three bedrooms, and three bathrooms, and outdoor fire place and its own boat launch! I would affectionately call the style of this home “Potter Barn on the Beach”.
You can see more about this property and many others at www.lummi-holidays.com. I am so excited to work further with these homes!
